Jess Alys is an artist who enjoys working from life for its directness and depth. She can create portraits in oil paint, pastel or charcoal, depending on the style and finish that suits the individual client. They can take between one and six sittings to complete, depending on the finished effect required.

Jess is also able to work from photographs, although she prefers to have several photos of the client to work from, to give a much clearer overall idea of the characteristics of the person she is drawing or painting. Jess finds it difficult to see what a person is really like from just one photo, it is very important to Jess to not only capture a very true likeness of the person but also something about their personality. She enjoys the process of bringing a photograph to life, "I try to embue it with a vitality that photographs lack- whether it is a recent image, or one from the past".

Jess began painting ten years ago when she became severly disabled with ME. Painting and drawing people she knew helped her come to terms with the illness, which not only effected her physical energy levels but also her ability to remember and recognise people, hence the importance of getting such a true likeness of the person sitting for her.

She uses colours and light to carefully depict the form and structure of the subject's features, bringing out their spirit. Her style is quite expressive.
